Cancer is among the most dreaded and extensively researched ailments affecting mankind. Treatment of the disease largely depends on the stage at which it is detected. It is imperative that it be diagnosed at the initial stages to ensure effective treatment of thefear factor associated with the disease has a telling effect on the morale of both the patient and the family of the affected individual. It is therefore necessary to carefully maintain the “Human Touch” aspect in order to take care of the disease and the related apprehensions and frustrations.
The Belgaum Cancer Hospital (BCH) is a one of its kind Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment facility located at Belgaum, North Karnataka, India. The present day 70 bed facility is a testimony to the dedicated and persistent efforts of Dr. Sandip Madhwapathy, a Cancer Surgeon, with vast and enriching experience with the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. BCH today caters to the diagnostic and treatment related needs of hundreds of cancer patients in the region and seeks to extend its domain of services to individuals beyond its present geographical domain of operations.
We at BCH believe in partnering with the society in order to deal with the menace of the disease which subject to early detection,is almost completely curable in most cases. The endevour of the team at BCH is to harness benefits of the latest technology and oncological research in order to provide what is needed by those affected by cancer, ie.,the much needed:
“Hope for a Better Tomorrow”.
The operational facility of Belgaum Cancer Hospital ( BCH), located on the highway, near the beautiful city lake in Belgaum, North Karnataka,India, is equipped with among the best possible diagnostic and treatment facilities pertaining to oncology. The hospital complex comprises the General and the Radiation sections and has a capacity of 70 beds, distributed over the top two floors. The ground floor is home to the Examination and Diagnostic facilities in addition to the administrative offices.
The Diagnostic facilities include a Pathological Lab, UltraSound Centre, X-Ray Dept and the CT Scan facility.
Radiation is often the most effective method of treatment for cancer patients. At BCH we
have made it our endeavor to provide the best possible radiation therapy to patients in the region who otherwise would have to travel long distances to avail the benefits of the same.
We installed a 12000 Curie THERATRON Cobalt 60 Phoenix unit from MDS Norton, Canada and this has been the workhorse of the department since Feb 2003. It offers the much needed treatment at a relatively lower cost and is thus beneficial to the poor sections of society.
Realizing the need to keep pace with the developments and the needs, we installed aVarian Linear Accelerator in Sept 2007. The high energy Linear accelerator (Linac) is equipped to deliver 3-Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (3-DCRT), a targeted and precise method of ensuring reduction in the acute and chronic side effects of radiation.
The CMS-XIO Radiotherapy Treatment Planning System (TPS) is among the most developed systems and our team of trained and experienced Radiation technologists help extend this benefit to the patients at BCH.
The Brachy-Therapy (internal radiation system) was installed along with the Linac and it helps localized treatment
by placing the radiation source into the tumor itself or into the surrounding tissue. On many occasions this treatment is done on outpatient basis.
BCH is committed to continually improve the treatment systems by upgrading the equipment and the requisite know-how. In the immediate fut
ure, it is planned to have a Linac with IMRT facility and efforts for the same are already underway.
Surgical Oncology is an important modality in the treatment of cancer. Newer techniques have made supra-major surgeries much safer. At BCH we adopt surgery as a treatment for cancers pertaining to cervix, breast, head and neck, ovary, stomach and esophagus to name a few. Conservative surgery has made great strides with the availability of dual energy Linac at our facility. Intra-operative radiation therapy is also being seriously contemplated in the next phase of expansion.
This involves the treatment of Cancer by intravenous administration of anti-cancer drugs. It is often recommended for patients with advanced stages of cancer. Chemotherapy offers a systemic treatment rather than a localized one as in case of Radiation or Surgery and thus is effective in targeting the chances of the spread of the disease. The duration and composition of the treatment are decided on the basis of the type of cancer and the stage of development.
Efficient treatment of cancer is often said to rest on the tripod of Chemotherapy, Surgery and Radiation and at BCH we are well equipped to offer the right combination of treatment to ensure effectiveness. Technological and knowledge-based up-gradation has been the essence of our being in terms of our evolution into a full-fledged treatment facility over the years. We believe that the present state of affairs is just the inception stage in effective cancer treatment.
The journey has just begun and the commitment will enable us keep pace with the developments and the challenges ahead.
